ANSI Safety Sign Types

Single-Hazard Signs

Single-Hazard signs should include a signal word, and follow the format of the symbol and message panels.

Multi-Hazard Signs 

Multi-Hazard signs should include a signal word and follow the format of the symbol and message panels.

If more than one hazard is present in a single area, a multi-hazard or multi-message sign may be used. The symbol & message corresponding to the highest hazard level should appear on the top or left of the sign, the location where a viewer reads first. This allows for the most hazardous situation to be noticed immediately.

The sign headers can be arranged (1) side by side, (2) top to bottom, or (3) with one header and multiple panels.

Arrangements (1) and (2) should be used when combining  one hazard sign (DANGER, WARNING, CAUTION) with one non-hazardous sign (NOTICE or Safety Instructions).

Arrangement (3) should be used when combining multiple hazard signs (DANGER, WARNING, CAUTION) together, or multiple hazard signs with non-hazardous signs. Only the highest hazard level signal word should be visible at the top of the sign. This allows viewers to immediately recognize and avoid the most hazardous situation. 

*Electromark recommends using the most hazardous label as the only header to limit any confusion regarding the most serious threat(s). 

Bilingual Signs

Symbols are strongly encouraged for bilingual signs because they allow viewers of all languages to comprehend the hazard information. Bilingual signs should include a signal word and follow the format of the symbol and message panels. 

The languages can be arranged (1) vertically with English and symbol first, (2) horizontally with English first and a shared symbol centered, or (3) with a shared symbol to one side and the message text on the opposite side.
